SD cards and small USB sticks fail in ways that look “random” until you realize the failure mode is usually writes: every new photo, every autosave, every “quick format” attempt, and every recovery export that lands back on the same card can overwrite clusters that still held recoverable data. Recuva can only work with what is still on the flash—your job is to stop the damage from spreading.

This article is a field checklist: what to do in the first minutes, how to choose a reader and port, where to recover to, and how to verify copies before you tell the owner the card is “safe to format.” It complements the workflow pages on this site and assumes you are on Windows with a normal user-data loss scenario—not a physically cracked card under forensic seal.

Step 1: stop using the card immediately

If the data still matters, treat the card as read-only in practice. That means no new photos, no letting apps cache to it, no “let me quickly reinstall the firmware utility on the same stick,” and no chkdsk-style repairs until you have a verified copy of what you can get.

Phones are especially risky: background camera apps, cloud gallery sync, and messaging apps can generate writes you do not notice. Prefer removing the card and working on a PC with a stable reader whenever you can.

Step 2: stabilize the hardware path

Flaky connections cause disconnects mid-scan, which wastes time and can leave partial exports. Prefer a known-good reader, a short cable, and a rear motherboard USB port when available. If you must use a hub, use a powered hub for spinning disks and large cards; for small SD jobs, stability still matters more than “USB 3” marketing.

  • Avoid touching the card edge contacts; handle by the plastic body.
  • If the reader feels warm or the OS reconnects repeatedly, fix that before scanning.
  • Label the reader and cable if you are working a busy bench—swap mistakes are common.

Step 3: recover to a PC disk—not back onto the card

The classic mistake is recovering onto the same volume you are scanning. That interleaves reads with writes and can destroy the very clusters you are trying to rescue. Pick an internal drive or a different external disk with plenty of free space, then create a dedicated folder for the job so you can hash and spot-check results.

If space is tight, recover in priority waves: smallest critical documents first, then larger media. For photos, consider exporting JPEG/RAW separately if your tool supports filtering—sorting 20,000 tiny browser thumbnails is morale-destroying.

Step 4: verify, then decide about format

Only after you have opened key files and confirmed backups should you consider formatting the card for reuse. If the card is suspect—lots of bad sectors in SMART-like tools (when available), repeated corruption, or sudden capacity changes—treat it as a replaceable part rather than a long-term archive.
